Vocabulary Activities

Students can choose whichever vocabulary activity they would like to do. Vocabulary activities are done Monday - Thursday nights for homework. Students need to select a different activity each night. Please have your student put the date on their homework. These are due every Friday morning.


Coin Flip:
Write a sentence for each of your vocabulary words. before you write each sentence, flip a coin. If it lands on "heads" the sentence must have and even number of words. If it lands on "tails" it must have an odd number.

Synonyms:
Write all of your vocabulary words. Then write at least one synonym for each word. If you cannot think of a synonym, you may use a short phrase.

Riddles:
Create a riddle for each of your vocabulary words. 
Example for "parrot":

I live in the rainforest.
I can talk.
I have feathers.
What am I?

Include an answer key.

Multiple Choice Quiz:
Write a multiple choice question for each of your vocabulary words. Include four possible answers for each question. Provide and answer key.

Paragraph:
Write a paragraph using as many of your vocabulary words as you can. Underline your words.

Examples:
Write each vocabulary word. Then write at least one example for each word.
Example: parrot: parakeet

Non-Examples:
Write each vocabulary word. Then write at least one non-example for each word.
Example: parrot: eagle


Silly Sentences:
Write a silly sentence for each of your vocabulary words. Underline the vocabulary words.

Prefixes and Suffixes:
Write each of your vocabulary words. Then circle the prefixes and suffixes. Tell how the prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of the base word.

He Said, She Said:
Write a sentence for each of your vocabulary words. Each sentence must contain quotation marks. Don't forget to underline the vocabulary words.

Matching Quiz:
Create a matching quiz for your vocabulary words. List the words on the left side of your paper. On the right side, write clues or short definitions for each word. Be sure to mix them up so they are not straight across. Include an answer key.

ABC Vocabulary:
Write the alphabet down the left side of your paper. For each letter, think of a word that is related to one of your vocabulary words. Write both words next to the letter. 
Examples:
A: Amazon -rainforest
B: beautiful -parrot

Not True!:
Write a sentence for each vocabulary word that is NOT true. Underline the vocabulary word.
Example:
Parrots are reptiles that live in the rainforest.


How it Sounds:
Write each of you vocabulary words. Then look each word up in the dictionary. Find the pronunciation for each word and write it next to the word on your paper.
Example:
parrot:  pærət


Antonyms:
Write each of your vocabulary words. Then write an antonym for each word. If you cannot think of an antonym, you may use a short phrase.


Roll the Dice:
Write a sentence for each vocabulary word. Before you write each sentence, roll a pair of dice. The total of the diced will tell you how many words should be in that sentence. Underline your words.

Acrostic Poem:
Write an acrostic poem for each of your vocabulary words. 
Example:
Poor little parrot
Always asking for a cracker
Really wanting more
Repeat, repeat, repeat
Oh, joy! Finally a cracker!
Thank you.


Double Up:
Write sentences with two vocabulary words in each sentence. Don't forget to underline the vocabulary words.

Questions:
Use each of your vocabulary words in an interrogative sentence. Don't forget to underline the vocabulary word.

True or False Quiz:
Create a True or False quiz for your vocabulary words. There should be at least one question for each word. Provide an answer key.

Word Webs:
Create Word-Webs for each of your vocabulary words. Start by writing the word in a circle in the center of your paper. Then connect the circle to more circles with related words and phrases. Include synonyms, definitions, and parts of speech.

Vocabulary Definitions:
Write a definition for each of your vocabulary words using your own words.

Short Story:
Write a story using as many of your vocabulary words as you can. Underline the vocabulary words. Illustrate your story.

Guiding Words:
Write each of your vocabulary words. Then look up your words in the dictionary. For each word, write the two guide words that appear on the same page as your vocabulary word.

Dialogue:
Write a dialogue between two people in script format. Use as many vocabulary words as you can. Underline the vocabulary words.

Sort:
Sort your vocabulary words by parts o speech:
-nouns
-verbs
-adjectives
-adverbs

What is the Question?
For each of your vocabulary words, write three questions for which the answer is the vocabulary word.
Example for the word, "parrot":
What is bird that lives in the rainforest?


Write a Letter:
Write a letter to a friend or family member. Use as many vocabulary words as you can. Underline the words.

Vocabulary Poem:
Write a rhyming poem using as many of your vocabulary words as you can. Underline the words.

Word Roots:
Write your vocabulary words. Circle any roots you find in the words. Look up the meaning of the roots. For each word, explain how the root meaning helps you to understand what the word means.

Dictionary Definition:
Look up each of your vocabulary words in the dictionary. Write the definition for each one.

Comic Strip:
Create a comic strip using as many of your vocabulary words as you can. Underline the words.

In the News:
Create a newspaper article using as many of your vocabulary words as you can. Include a headline, picture, and caption. Underline your vocabulary words.

Vocabulary Hunt:
Search for your vocabulary words in published text such as books, magazines, and newspapers. When you find one of your words, write the word, the title of the publication where you found it, and the page number on your paper.

Sentence Around:
Write each of your vocabulary words. Then write a sentence using the word in a ring around each word.
